Dio Dio At Donington UK: Live 1983 & 1987
It's inevitable that a sea of posthumous Dio material is set to flood the land of heavy music. However, let it be known that Dio At Donington isn't just another vault-raiding cash grab. The production of this particular double-disc, capturing separate performances at the prestigious Donington festival, was actually overseen by Dio prior to his demise. Therefore, we already know it has his stamp of approval, putting its best foot forward. Kicking off with the 1983 disc, rousing anthem "Stand Up and Shout" gives way to a set packed with fan favourites from Dio's solo career, as well as a few Black Sabbath gems. From "Children of the Sea" through to "Holy Diver," "Heaven & Hell" and more, one can taste the fiery enthusiasm and feel the energized pace of every track. Seamless and dominant, the band grab hold of their audience, shaking them into submission, a state solidified by the 1987 follow-up. While many of the same tracks appear on this disc ― festival appearances necessitate only performing the hits ― despite being older and wiser, the performance is no less stunning. Rich and dynamic, powerful yet poetic, Live At Donington is one of the best live efforts music has seen in many moons. (Niji)
