Only Affection

In just under four years, Berlin-via-London-via-Toronto disco revivalist Digits has released an LP, EP, mixtape, mini-album and a singles collection. Offering the majority of these for free via his website, Alt Altman's (aka Digits) passion for his art is as undeniable as it is widespread. On his latest EP, the five-track Only Affection, Altman releases his most focused, sonically tight and song-based work to date. Anchoring his whispery, slippery vocal delivery with waves of low-end synthesis, Digits fills in the blanks with single-finger keyboarding and cracking, shuttering rhythms. With tracks like "Love is Only Affection" and "Shake Your Body Down," Altman demonstrates just how much his work ethic has improved his craft, as the rhythms feel sharper and melodies blissfully alternate between snug and anomalous. But it's on "Every Little Step," a track employing elements from songs by Junior Boys and M83, that Digits lets his style radiate, framing Only Affection as an artistic coming-out-party for a musician possessed by the process of making music.
