The summer blockbuster season kicks off this weekend with the much-anticipated release of The Avengers. Director Joss Whedon delivers the culmination of classic Marvel characters in dramatic fashion, deftly combing intelligent story-telling with effects-heavy action sequences. Robert Downey Jr. reprises his role as Tony Stark, along with an ensemble cast including the likes of Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow.

Next up, director Tony Kaye offers a critical look at the American education system in Detachment, featuring Adrien Brody and Tim Blake as archetypal teachers in an inner-city school. The film follows a host of fictional educators' approaches, juxtaposed by interviews with real teachers.

And finally, Norwegian director Morten Tyldum's thriller, Headhunters, will enjoy a wider release this week, after enthralling audiences at last year's Toronto International Film Festival. When a successful corporate recruiter (Aksel Hennie) is forced to moonlight as an art thief, he ends up on the run, jeopardizing his seemingly perfect lifestyle.
