Different Stripes

A Tribute to The White Stripes

BY Cam LindsayPublished May 1, 2002

Late last year some unknown hooligans covered the Strokes on a simple Casio keyboard. Well, the same hooligans are back to tackle the other great garage hope, the White Stripes. The keyboards are still around, but "Hotel Yorba” sounds more like a Hee Haw reunion and "I Think I Smell A Rat” is almost unrecognisable, with its thick, dubby overtones complete with a melodica representing the chorus. However, it’s not until you hear the electrofied bastardisation of "Fell In Love With A Girl” that you begin thinking "things aren’t right, they’re fantastic.”
