Derrick Carter

Square Dancing In A Round House

BY Romina WendellPublished Feb 1, 2003

Playing every instrument, performing all the vocals and engineering every track, Chicago house producer, Classic label owner and DJ legend Derrick L. Carter finally releases his debut artist album, Square Dancing In A Round House. From the fat squelch of the dance floor-bound "Boompty Boomp Theme" to the soulful electro-funk and house of "Do You Believe" and the jazzy retro-groove of "All Dreams Collide," Carter's diverse musical repertoire spins into a glitter ball of old and new school beats. The driving electro diatribe of "Where You At?" and Carter's way too long imitation of a six-year-old's friendship fixated monologue in "Friends Talk" are minor self-indulgent wrenches in the overall flow. The pure joy and booty shaking integrity of the majority of tracks, however, confirm Carter's place as one of Chicago's foremost music shakers and makers.
