Depeche Mode hero Martin Gore is returning with a new solo effort. Called The Third Chimpanzee, the upcoming EP is due out early next year on January 29 via Mute. To get us going now, however, he's shared the song "Mandrill."

"Mandrill" was produced and written by Gore and recorded earlier this year at Electric Ladyboy in Santa Barbara. You can check it out below via a newly shared video.

"The first track I recorded had a sound that wasn't human," Gore explained of the EP in a statement. "It sounded primate-like. I decided to name it 'Howler,' after a monkey. Then, when it came time to name the EP, I remembered reading the book The Rise and Fall of the Third Chimpanzee. It all made sense to call it that, as the EP was made by one of the third chimpanzees."

The five-track instrumental EP will arrive on CD, digitally and as a limited 12-inch vinyl release on "Azure Blue" wax.

Gore's last solo effort arrived back in 2015 with his MG album, while Depeche Mode released Spirit in 2017.
