Sara La Kali

BY Brent HagermanPublished Jan 22, 2010

If 19th century gypsies roaming the countryside of Eastern Europe had drum programming and synths, it might have sounded like this. With members from Prague, Serbia, St. Petersburg and Bosnia all drawn together by a love of Roma-gypsy music, !Deladap inject traditional folk music with urban sounds and club beats. Lead by DJ/producer Stani Vana the ensemble includes violin, classical guitar, bouzouki, trombone and accordion. This fusion plays out in a variety of ways on the record, making Sara La Kali, their third full-length release, very diverse indeed. "Cherhaya" is a slinky cabaret ballad, "Kaj Tu Salas" begins with rich legato string textures before switching to beat-driven, frenzied bowing and "Raczake Shavora" is dominated by a slow, heavy bass groove. !Deladap are a nice discovery if you're looking for European folk-urban fusion.
