Dekapitator

The Storm Before the Calm

BY Greg PrattPublished Jul 18, 2007

Exhumed main-man Matt Harvey is back with his ultra-kult band Dekapitator, who have been bringing their brand of retro thrash-cum-primitive black metal to the, um, listening minority for years. Now with their first release on a bigger metal label, the band should have metalheads drooling over this one. They’re not trying to win anyone over with their technical playing or inventive songwriting, rather they’re just going for it, old school style. And sometimes that’s the best way to go. But it doesn’t sound like a cop-out or a trend; tunes like the hilariously named "The Storm Before the Calm” and "Toxic Sanctuary” (well, hilarious if you were born and bred on ’80s thrash) prove the band are top-notch at their game, no matter how lo-fi and ugly the end result is. Gloriously dirty, Dekapitator are the perfect remedy for today’s ultra-technical extreme metal climate.
