Arts & Crafts' ever-expanding roster just got a little bigger, as the esteemed Canadian label has added another new band: Rhode Island alt-country eclectics Deer Tick. Their album Negativity will come out on September 24, with the U.S. release handled by Partisan Records.
The album was recorded earlier this year in Portland with Los Lobos member Steve Berlin (Faith No More, the Tragically Hip). Latin American outfit Grupo Fantasma contributed brass. The songs were penned during 2012, in which time Deer Tick band leader John McCauley had his wedding engagement fall apart and his father was jailed for conspiracy and tax fraud.
According to a press release, this is "McCauley's most personal work thus far as well as the band's most undeniable and universal, their famously freewheeling musical approach refined here into a gloriously cohesive whole."
Stylistic touchstones include baroque pop, boozy punk, AM gold, bar band blues, country soul, and rock'n'roll. Songwriter Vanessa Carlton (of "A Thousand Miles" fame) duets with McCauley on "In Our Time."
