Published Feb 15, 2011After much talk, Death Cab for Cutie have finally set a release date for their much-anticipated new album. The LP, Codes and Keys, is due out May 31 courtesy of Atlantic, the band announced today (February 15) via their website.
As we learned late last year, the album is being
UPDATE: As Death Cab's Chris Walla has so kindly pointed out to us, he's actually producing the album (as usual), not Moulder, who is only mixing Codes and Keys.
Also, the record is said to be less guitar-focused. In a 2010 interview with Stereogum, Death Cab bassist Nick Harmer said, "There are definitely guitars on this record, there are just less of them than before and we're using them in different ways this time. Ben was really inspired by writing on acoustic guitar and on a piano, so often those parts become voices or keyboard lines, rather than guitar parts. We really experimented with piecing the songs together in different ways and using the studio differently, so this a much less guitar-centric album than we've ever made before."
So far there is no tracklisting or cover for Codes and Keys, but we're sure those are just around the corner. In the meantime, Death Cab have lined up some new spring/summer dates, including a pair of Alberta shows. A post on their website also says to expect "more tour dates soon."
