Published Feb 03, 2009If you thought it was just indie rockers and punks pillaging the sounds of the Caribbean, well, meet London duo De Tropix, who go tropical not just in their music but also in name. Featuring singer/songwriter Cherry and producer/part-time lyrics man/beatmaker Damon (aka Instinct), in their words the duo "carry the influences of many different styles and songs to capture many moods" but "ya better be ready to party!!!" If Cherry's voice sounds familiar, it might be that you've heard her back up M.I.A. on stage, as she splits her time working the crowds as Maya Arulpragasam's hype-woman, backing singer and choreographer. As De Tropix, however, Cherry and Damon mash together everything from dancehall, grime and musical scores to soca, ska and Tropicalia, and just let it all hang out and fly. They're reportedly working on a full-length but being the label-weary musicians they are, they've decided to offer a free EP for curious sorts to download. Click here to grab that.
