Day One

Ordinary Man

BY James KeastPublished May 1, 2000

Under the wolf's clothing of hip-hop beats, this is pop of the soft, romantic variety, full of confessionals and whining and romantic promises and even a catchy stalker song ("I'm In Your Life") that rivals "Every Breath You Take." Rather than fronting about what players they are, the Bristolian duo of Phelim Byrne and Donnie Hardwidge let their insecurities all hang out on tracks like "You're Trying Too Hard." Despite hailing from the hometown of trip-hop, Ordinary Man has a distinctly laid back, Californian feel to it that makes it a perfect record for the lazy hazy days to come. The lyrics can get a little touchy-feely at times, but this record will help smooth the harsh bumps in your good vibrations.
