Published Jul 29, 2016Vancouver singer-songwriter David Simard will release his next record The Heavy Wait a week from today, but Exclaim! is ending eager listeners' wait right now with an early stream of the entire album.
The 11 songs on the LP have been pieced together over the last eight years, drawing inspiration from the range of places Simard has called home — from Montreal to Paris to the remote reaches of northern British Columbia.
The Heavy Wait was recorded live-off-the-floor at Arcade Fire's old Petite Eglise studio, and it hears the sounds of horns, lap steel, piano and even clarinet embellishing upon Simard and his band's rootsy core.
The result is a set of lush, twangy tracks that range from wistful to whimsical, showing off elements of everything from blues rock ("The Guitar Player") to gentle folk ballads ("I'm Bad"). It all comes to a close with the slow-burning "Rorschach," bringing the album to a dramatic, satisfying close.
