Remember That Night: Live at the Royal Albert Hall

BY Chris AyersPublished Jan 25, 2008

Pink Floyd vocalist/guitarist David Gilmour has assembled what is one of the finest concert compilations in rock. The live disc of Remember That Night was recorded in London’s most famous concert hall, with a world-class light show that fans have come to expect from any Floyd incarnation, but Gilmour invites an A-list of musicians to make it a night never to be forgotten. Supporting his then-new album On an Island (which he covers in its entirety), Gilmour opens with Floyd’s "Breathe,” boasting a voice as strong and resilient as the one first heard on the 1973 original. Floyd keyboardist Rick Wright tickles the keys impeccably, though his own voice doesn’t fare so well on "Time.” Almost all the On an Island selections feature backing vocals by David Crosby and Graham Nash, and Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera steps up into the spotlight on the title track. "Take a Breath” is the only heavy hitter in the set, much like Gilmour’s About Face material, and "A Pocketful of Stones” is new age for heavy stoners. Floyd chestnuts "Fat Old Sun,” "Wot’s… Uh the Deal” and "Arnold Layne,” sung by guest David Bowie, hardly compete with bonus tunes "Astronomy Domine,” "Echoes” and a handful of Syd Barrett songs. Extras include three documentaries, videos, studio footage and a photo gallery.
