Sadly, the fifth anniversary of David Bowie's passing is approaching, and as the world gets ready to mark that sombre milestone, his widow Iman has reflected on her time together with the late rock legend.
The supermodel and philanthropist opened up about Bowie in a new interview with Harper's Bazaar, shining a light on their life together and her continued love for her late husband.
Bowie died of liver cancer on January 10, 2016, and as Iman explained, the anniversary has understandably been a dark time for her.
"That's the saddest time," Iman said. "He's hiding in plain sight. His fans are still around, his music is still relevant."
Iman went on to explain that last year she marked the anniversary by heading to the redwoods forests near San Francisco.
"And on the day of his passing, I went on a hike and a bluebird flew in front of me. A bluebird, above all things!" she said, making a reference to one of Bowie's last-ever songs "Lazarus" and its line "You know, I'll be free / Just like that bluebird / Now ain't that just like me?"
She continued: "I asked the tour guide, and he said, 'Oh, they're very rare here, bluebirds. And so now, instead of remembering it as sad, it is more of a joyous day."
Reflecting further on Bowie, Iman said, "David is in our hearts and minds on a daily basis, for all of us. You know, this was my true love. My daughter once asked me if I would ever marry again and I said, 'never.'"
She went on to say, "He was a very funny, warm gentleman — you know, everyone talks about him being futuristic, but no, he was not, he liked more than anything to wear a three-piece suit. It was a beautiful, ordinary life and that was what was great about it. We could live in New York, pick up our daughter from school, walk everywhere… You know, I wish we had had more years."
As previously reported, Bowie is being honoured with a new 7-inch in celebration of what would have been his 74th birthday on January 8. The release will feature a pair of unreleased covers of songs by John Lennon and Bob Dylan.
The online concert special "A Bowie Celebration: Just for one day!" is also set to take place on January 8 featuring Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor, Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan, Gary Oldman, Jane's Addiction's Perry Farrell, Macy Gray, Bush's Gavin Rossdale, Def Leppard's Joe Elliott and the Cult's Ian Astbury.
