David Bowie has undergone many transformations over the years, and soon his earliest period will be documented with an extensive box set. Five Years 1969–1973 will be out on September 25 through Parlophone, and this will be the first in a series of Bowie box sets.
The box contains 10 albums and is available either as 12 CDs or 13 LPs (or digital download). This includes six studio albums: David Bowie AKA Space Oddity (1967), The Man Who Sold the World (1970), Hunky Dory (1971), The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972), Aladdin Sane (1973) and PinUps (1973). Most of these albums have been remastered.
Also in the box, Ziggy Stardust comes as a 2003 mix by Ken Scott, and there are the live albums Live Santa Monica '72 (2008) and Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture Soundtrack (1983).
There are also come exclusive materials in a two-disc compilation called Re:Call 1, which is made up non-LP singles, special single versions and B-sides. See the tracklist below.
The set will come with an accompanying book — 128 pages for the CD box, 84 pages for the vinyl box — containing technical notes, photos, album reviews from the period, and a forward from Ray Davies of the Kinks. Those who get the CDs will notice that the underside of the discs is gold rather than silver.
Stay tuned for further Bowie box sets to follow.
