Published Feb 25, 2014Hamilton, ON combo Dark Mean have risen up from the garage today (February 25) to deliver Samuel the Phoenix, a new EP full of high-flying indie-folk melodies.
A press release notes that the four-song set, recorded with producer Michael Keire (Wildlife, Jessy Lanza, the Dirty Nil), offers "well-crafted arrangements that are nearly impossible to fault." This includes the breezy title cut, which describes a watery journey across the sea atop an arrangement of plaintive guitar strums and organ swells. Also giving it up for a bird of flight in its title is "Albatross," a weeper about telling someone to cut their losses. Rootsier guitar plucking is showcased on the minimalist "High Heaven," while the EP closes itself out with the suitably titled "Last One."
