Regina-based singer-songwriter Danny Olliver is set to deliver his self-titled full-length debut later this week, but Exclaim! is giving you an early listen to it, right now.
The eight-song offering follows last year's Bad Omen Walking EP — a debut release that propelled Olliver to sharing stages with artists like the Trews, Del Barber and Jason Plumb. The new songs hear his growth as a storyteller, both lyrically and instrumentally. Having started out as a fingerstyle guitarist years before adding vocals to his performances, Olliver is able to take listeners on a narrative journey with or without words — though his folksy, heartfelt, and at times almost-falsetto croon is a welcome addition.
From the dramatic but reserved, slow-burning opener "In Between" to more upbeat, clap-along, folk-pop barnburners like "Giving Up Giving In" and "Speak to You," Olliver showcases his prowess and versatility as a songwriter and musician. The album wraps up with the surprisingly lively "Dead End Road," cementing this record as anything but what the last song's title implies.
