Hamburg-based Poker Flat, the house (label) that Steve Bug built, releases the inaugural full-length from DJ/producer Daniel Dexter, Focus On: Daniel Dexter. Containing a selection of past, present and future cuts, as well as salacious remixes from Dexter's considerable back catalogue, it will no doubt bring the Berlin party-starter's highly percussive and innovative house sound to a considerably wider audience, which is a very good thing. Possessing a great ear for abstract melody and a genre-bending knowledge of percussion, which raises his tracks out of the four-on-the-floor mire plaguing house music these days, Dexter imbues his tracks with an emotional punch that owes as much to the great electronic Mecca of Detroit as to his dexterity as a producer and musician. A particular highlight is "Into The Wild," which is as emotional as it will get on the dance floor this year. This is a great primer for those who want an introduction to a producer that knows his house.
