Dance Movie Pay Homage to 'Dirty Dancing' with "Penny" Video

Haligonian music makers Dance Movie are readying their sophomore record for release next month, and ahead of its arrival the band have shared a brand new video for "Penny."

The track will appear on Pierce, which was recorded at Nova Scotia's Old Confidence Lodge. The process was a totally immersive one, with the three bandmates rooming, cooking and going on general store runs together for the duration of five days last July. The resulting songs were taken back to Halifax and left in the hands of usually Pacific Northwest-situated producer John Goodmanson (Sleater-Kinney, Cloud Nothing, Blondie).

The band describe the finished record as "the distillation of passion, melody, collaboration, and chemistry into a single heart, made tough by its exposure to the sea-salted air, but always soft at its core" — and "Penny" serves as a fine introduction to the new material.

The accompanying music video was directed by Daniel Ledwell, an old friend of the band, esteemed Canadian record producer and husband to Jenn Grant.

"He had already cut out the 'PENNY' letters when I got there," Dance Movie's Tara Thorne tells Exclaim! "Jenn did my makeup, which you can't see — it's too bad but I'm fine with it because I hate cameras — and we looked at pictures of Diane Lane in Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains for eye inspiration. I love how layered and smoky and weird it ended up — it looks like an old MTV artifact, which is a perfect complement to how the whole record sounds. Penny is the best character in Dirty Dancing and the song is a tribute to her."

An appropriate source of inspiration from a band called Dance Movie, indeed. Watch the homage to Johnny's pre-Baby dance partner, "Penny," below.

Pierce is officially out on April 28.
