Dan Mangan Launches His Own Record Label: Madic Records
While Dan Mangan will be issuing a new album through Arts & Crafts sometime in the near future, he's about to flip his role in the label game by starting up an imprint of his own called Madic Records.

Mangan announced his business venture today (March 3) in a press release, noting that he's teamed with Arts & Crafts to start the side-label, which will first deliver a two-song single from Calgary act Astral Swans.

"I'd had this longstanding pipe dream of having a boutique label," Mangan explained in a statement. "For years, it seemed a fulfilling hobby; to help spread the word about music I believed in that wasn't getting enough attention. It was never quite the right time, and I figured if it ever were to be, that it would happen fairly organically, and because a particular album or project fell in my hands. It took about one listen through Astral Swans' rough mixes to light a proverbial fire."

Astral Swans' "You Carry a Sickness"/"Park Street" single drops March 25. Led by Matthew Swann, of Extra Happy Ghost!!!, the project is said to be informed by "'60s folk, no wave, and '90s sludge," with touchstones including Nick Drake, Sonic Youth and fellow Cowtown songwriter Chad VanGaalen. You can check out the hypnotic A-side down below.

Additionally, an Astral Swans LP is expected to arrive later in 2014, and the project has a handful of dates coming up with Jay Malinowski and the Deadcoast. You'll find the show info down below.

As for Mangan's next album, the artist revealed he had been recording last December at Vancouver's Warehouse studios with his band. A due date has not yet been delivered for the LP, but it will be credited to Dan Mangan + Blacksmith.

I'm fairly content to shed the "singer-songwriter" label," he had written in a blog post earlier this year. "It's weird, because those are words that literally describe what it is that I'm doing, but the established social understanding of that term feels very limiting, and not indicative of how I feel about this music... Some time ago, I'd figured that the band had been such a crucial part of how this music has developed, they ought to have a name, but that it couldn't come from me."
