After speaking to us about the arrival of a new album earlier this year, Dan Mangan has lifted the curtain on his fourth solo studio effort.
Titled More or Less, Mangan's latest will arrive November 2 through Arts & Crafts. Ten tracks in length, the album was produced by Drew Brown (Radiohead, Beck) and Simone Felice (the Lumineers).
"More or Less is about witnessing birth, and in some ways rebirth," Mangan said in a statement. "It's about feeling disconnected from a popular identity and becoming acclimated to a new one. It's about raising kids in a turbulent world. It's about unanswerable questions and kindness and friendship and fear."
Alongside the announcement, Mangan has shared new album cut "Just Fear," which arrives alongside a lyric video. It follows the previously shared album tracks "Troubled Mind" and "Fool for Waiting."
In a statement, Mangan explained that "Just Fear" was written after the birth of his second son, Hayden, and not long after Donald Trump was elected president of the United States:
I needed a silver lining. Holding a newborn baby is a bit supernatural. It's a slap in the face of the rat race. New life, like sudden death, cannot help but conjure feelings of mortality, absolution, and gratitude. Newborns are so precious and innocent - so beautifully fresh and unsullied by fear or greed or ego. It's like you lift the baby in the air and yell to the whole world: "Hey guys! We get one more shot at not screwing this up!"
When I stared at Hayden in the middle of the night - back aching, lost in a dizzying mixture of elation and exhaustion, the world's woes would dissolve from my consciousness. When I'd reflect on how the world might look when he is an adult, I had to find a way to have hope. Call it denial, but something tells me that that the newspaper headlines have always been in bold. It's not that courage and resilience aren't required in weighty times, but I think I just needed someone to tell me that we're going to be okay, even if it was just myself.
Mangan has also shared some upcoming tour dates. Two shows alongside Snow Patrol in October are bookended by a September 16 performance in British Columbia's Kootenay National Park and an October 13 appearance at Cicada Music & Arts festival in St. Catharines.
Mangan will then head to Europe in November for a string of dates alongside Laura Gibson. You can find those dates here.
