Horse

BY David LewisPublished Feb 1, 2000

Howie B masterminded this experimental dance set. Opening with the mellow drum & bass grooves of "Pony Express," Horse sounds inspired by its equestrian theme from the driving techno-funk of "The Cobbler" and "Don't Milk Ya Hoss" to the trip-hop explorations of "When Betty Comes To Town" and "Black Beauty." In fact, the ballads "When Betty..." and "Bareback" sound like spaghetti Western themes for the 21st century. If the letdowns here are vocal pieces like "Giddy Up" and "A Man Called Betty," this largely instrumental program confirms how Horse inspires some of Howie B's most seductive beats.
