Gabi Delgado-López — co-founder of influential Dusseldorf electro-punk unit D.A.F. — has died. Longtime Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft bandmate Robert Görl broke the news of his passing on Instagram, confirming Delgado-López died on Sunday night (March 22). He was 61.
"I found out today that my longtime friend and bandmate Gabi Delgado passed away last night," Görl wrote.
Delgado-López was born in Spain but moved to Germany with his family in 1966 when he was eight years old. Alongside Görl, he formed D.A.F. — or Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft — in 1978. The following year, the project released their debut album Produkt Der Deutsch-Amerikanischen Freundschaft via Warning Records before issuing Die Kleinen Und Die Bösen in 1980. Die Kleinen Und Die Bösen marked the first-ever LP release for famed record label Mute.
This led D.A.F. to a series of albums on the German-loving Virgin imprint, with Delgado-López and Görl having an on-again, off-again relationship with D.A.F. as the project went in and out of hiatus over the years. Delgado-López also pursed a solo career, as well as recorded with the Delkom and DAF/DOS projects.
Delgado-López and Görl continued to work as D.A.F. until Delgado-López's death and even were performing live together until just recently.
