Hypnagogic States

 Hypnagogic States
Described as a stopgap before the release of their 13th LP, 4:13 Dream, the Cure enlist five of Billboard's Modern Rock placeholders to remix 4:13 Dream's first four singles. A rather pedestrian 30 Seconds to Mars remix of first single "The Only One" sets the scene for dreadful outings courtesy of Jade Puget from AFI, Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance, Julien-K and Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump and Pete Wentz. The saving grace of the EP is the 21-minute remix from English post-rockers 65 Days of Static. The track "Exploding Head Syndrome" casts off the rigid structure that the first four employ, blending together the four singles into a seamless workout of punchy drums and clanging rhythms. With what seems to be a Sarah Palin-esque attempt to bring in the young vote, Hypnagogic States offers the listener nothing more than a Facebook friends list. (Geffen)
