Craig Finn

"Honolulu Blues"

BY Alex HudsonPublished Nov 25, 2011

Black Friday is upon us, which means that the Hold Steady's Craig Finn just released his solo single, "Honolulu Blues." For those of us who won't be able to track down one of the 600 copies of this limited-edition seven-inch, the singer's label Vagrant Records has now posted the A-side online.

Finn isn't kidding about the "Blues" part -- this rockin' tune is anchored by a swaggering boogie and a standard 12-bar chord progression. With the song's gritty electric guitars and densely lyrical approach to the blues, it sounds like Finn has been listening to a lot of Highway 61 Revisited lately.

This track will appear on Finn's solo album, Clear Heart Full Eyes, due out January 24. The disc was recorded in a busy five-day session with producer Mike McCarthy (Spoon, ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead) and backing musicians that include members of White Denim, the Heartless Bastards, Phosphorescent, and Centro-matic.
