Known for their reinterpretations of other artists' songs since their version of the Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane" caught the ears of Trinity Session listeners in 1988, Cowboy Junkies have detailed a new covers album.
Songs of the Recollection, arriving March 25 via Latent Recordings, brings together both newly recorded and previously released covers from the Toronto outfit. Selections include Gordon Lightfoot's "The Way I Feel," Neil Young's "Don't Let It Bring You Down" and "Love in Mind," the Cure's "Seventeen Seconds," and more songs by the Rolling Stones, Gram Parsons, Bob Dylan and Vic Chesnutt.
Songs of the Recollection is previewed today with a cover of David Bowie's "Five Years," the opening track from 1972's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars. Below, you can find the Cowboy Junkies' studio recording, alongside a 2017 live performance of the song.
"Those ominous, persistent drums fade-up, the opening piano chord explodes and Bowie steps into the listeners life," the group's Michael Timmins shares in a statement. "This was the type of moment that turned our innocent minds inside out when we were young and hunkering greedily around the turntable. When we play it live today, 50 years after it was written, it seems to have more power and relevance than ever; climate change, the pandemic, collapsing democracies ... choose your crisis ... David predicted them all."
Cowboy Junkies last released Ghosts in 2020.
