Cornershop featuring Bubbley Kaur

Cornershop & The Double 'O' Groove Of

BY Erin MacLeodPublished Mar 15, 2011

It's been nearly seven years since the release of "Topknot," Cornershop's first notable collaboration with Bubbley Kaur. Its smooth, sugary, summery groove has stood the test of time ― the track is a winner. But there are most certainly other champion tunes on this long-awaited collection of Cornershop-meets-Kaur compositions. Tjinder Singh and Ben Ayres bring warm funk, marching band measures, hot horns, tabla rhythms and hip-hop beats to the table, alongside Kaur's pure, clear tunefulness and Punjabi folk-laced lyrics. It's a lovely combination that reflects the ear for quality, interesting, innovative pop that has been Cornershop's trademark since their breakthrough "Brim Full of Asha" single way back in 1997. Standout cuts include the wonderfully danceable (though you wouldn't know it from the title) "Don't Shake It," the bass-heavy "Double Decker Eyelashes" and the head-nod-inducing "United Provinces of India."
