Contest A Thousand Hockey Songs
CBC enraged hockey lovers nationwide when a public spat with the author of their famed Hockey Night In Canada theme led to the iconic tune’s departure from the national broadcaster (heard soon on TSN and CTV affiliates), but they’re trying to let the public in on compositions vying to be the new harbinger of sticks, blades, and Saturday night. Fodder for a reality show this fall, HNIC is directing musicians to upload original themes to anthemchallenge.cbc.ca by August 31 for a shot at infamy and $100,000.

There are well over 1,000 entries currently, including cool ones by rookies Dan Ledwell (In-Flight Safety) and Dan Tavis (Attack in Black), chippy newcomers Shotgun Jimmie and Brent Randall, and gritty veterans like the Evaporators and Jim Guthrie. Otherwise, the spectrum of proposals, from super lo-fi and bizarre to equally misguided, high-end studio creations, suggests that selecting a final anthem will be a challenge indeed.
