Conrad Schnitzler

Endtime

BY Bryon HayesPublished Jun 5, 2012

An unheralded legend, Conrad Schnitzler was one of the founding fathers of the kosmische strain of Krautrock. Besides having a literally endless catalogue of solo releases, Schnitzler's legacy includes the formation of Kluster and participation in Electronic Meditation, the debut release from Tangerine Dream. His sound is singular, timeless and exceptionally exploratory. Working until the end, Endtime was created only four days before his passing. Schnitzler often eschewed pop music tactics such as "hooks" and trite melodies, preferring his unique vision to be taken at face value. Endtime doesn't deviate ― the listener is offered 36 short pieces that blend seamlessly into each other, stylistically spanning his entire catalogue. Animated laser guns and stratospheric drift butt up against droid techno and tumbling waves of laboratory gurgle. It's as inorganic a sound palette as can be without sounding overtly robotic in nature. Endtime is the perfect swansong for the true cosmic joker.
