Published Jun 02, 2010When we reported that Boris had teamed up with the Cult's Ian Astbury on a new EP, we had a feeling that it might be some sort of joke, and that the Japanese psych rock weirdos had just been collaborating with some long-haired dude who happened to look exactly like him. Today, however, we've caught word that the collaboration is 100-percent legit.
A press release from the band's publicist explained that Astbury teamed up with Boris to record four songs in Japan. Three of them are originals, and the fourth is a cover of the Cult's "Rain," sung by Boris guitarist Wata. Together, those tracks make up the BXI EP, which is due out this fall.
According to the press release, "Astbury's vocals are a perfect match for Boris's straightforward, laid-back, but still raw and imaginative songwriting constructed for the EP; another intriguing display within the band's ever-morphing, extensive résumé of releases, tours and collaborations."
There is no official release date for the BXI EP as of yet, but it's said to be coming on CD and LP this September via Southern Lord. As previously mentioned, Boris will be touring through Canada this summer.
