Published Feb 23, 2015This Sunday evening (February 22), Hollywood assembled for the 87th annual Academy Awards and, as always, the night included a few musical prizes and performances.
Notably, John Legend and Common won Best Original Song for "Glory" from Selma. They beat out Tegan and Sara and the Lonely Island ("Everything Is Awesome" from The Lego Movie), Rita Ora ("Grateful" from Beyond the Lights), Glen Campbell ("I'm Not Gonna Miss You" from Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me) and Adam Levine ("Lost Stars" from Begin Again).
As for Best Original Score, it went to Alexandre Desplat for The Grand Budapest Hotel. This beat out another score by Desplat (The Imitation Game) plus Hans Zimmer (Interstellar), Gary Yershon (Mr. Turner) and Jóhann Jóhannsson (The Theory of Everything).
Also on the music front, the jazz school drama Whiplash fared well, as J.K. Simmons won Best Supporting Actor and the film scored Best Sound Mixing and Best Film Editing.
Musical performers over the course of the night included Lady Gaga, Maroon 5, and Rita Ora, plus a collaboration between Tegan and Sara, the Lonely Island, Questlove and Will Arnett, among others.
