Colorlist

Lists

BY Scott A. GrayPublished Apr 27, 2008

Echoing the ambient jazz and sparse electronics employed on Broken Social Scene’s Feel Good Lost with album opener "Lluvia,” Chicago post-rock collective Colorlist continue exploring a sound familiar to our home and native land. For all the soaring and cutting avant-jazz swirls and slices that recall Do Make Say Think and instrumental Sufjan Stevens in equal measure, there are scores of chilly, skittering electronics firmly referencing Boards of Canada’s sound palette. There is no overt hero worship evident in the sound of Lists though; Colorlist are clearly comprised of experienced improvisers and composers of broad tastes who submit their contributions to the group sound in distinctive musical voices. Lists can serve as fascinating but unobtrusive background music when limited attention is available or as an engaging musical exploration to fully immerse the senses in.
