Published Jul 31, 2012Al Spx of Cold Specks gave festivalgoers a taste of her gorgeous voice (and the Fresh Prince theme song) as the star of her collaborative Sunday morning workshop with Great Lake Swimmers, and when evening rolled around, she took over the Island Stage without having to share the spotlight. Though joined by her band, all eyes watched Spx as she effortlessly belted out what she has previously described as "doom soul." Running through songs off debut album I Predict a Graceful Expulsion, the band opened with "The Mark" and delivered highlight "Blank Maps" early in the set. "Elephant Head" and single "Holland" were also especially delightful to hear live. The set came to a close with a gorgeous a cappella rendition of "Old Stepstone," which the stage crew tried to axe because of time restraints, but Spx went ahead with it and everyone looking on was glad she did.
