Coastgaard Return with 'Devil on the Balcony' LP, Premiere New Single

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Dec 18, 2015

Brooklyn-based indie rock crew Coastgaard have revealed plans to release their sophomore record. Titled Devil on the Balcony, the new album is set to arrive on February 26 through eOne Music.

The new material hears the band taking on a cinematic sound — perhaps unsurprising given that members Matt Miller (guitar, lead vocals) and Sean Glassman (guitar, vocals, keys) share a film and video editing background. Rounded out by Paolo Codega (bass, vocals) and Brian D'Alessandro (drums, vocals, keys), who come from the neuroscience and statistics fields, respectively, it makes sense that the group's sound is one that balances artistic beauty with careful precision.

According to a press release, Devil on the Balcony hears Coastgaard "capitalizing on the endearing nature and organic qualities of live instrumentation." It's a sound they're dedicated to maintaining, with D'Alessandro explaining that there's a "certain level of flexibility that cannot be duplicated using electronic elements in music."

The first example of the new record arrives with the duplicitous single, "Well Adjusted Man."

"This song follows the inner monologue of a man who vacillates between brooding self-reflection and self-assured potency," the band explain. "The verses are moody and bring us inwards, but this introspection ends at the chorus, which explodes with extroverted grit."

You can hear that transition from moody pensiveness to infectiously upbeat hooks for yourself by listening to the exclusive premiere of "Well Adjusted Man" in the player below. Scroll past the album's tracklisting to give it a listen.

The band will play Piano's in New York on January 28. Full information for the show can be found here.
