Published Nov 01, 2011This one took us by surprise. We knew that Cloud Nothings were planning a Steve Albini-produced album called Attack on Memory (due out January 24 through Carpark Records), which would have "an overall more plaintive air." But after this year's giddy, pop punk-inspired eponymous LP, we didn't expect songwriter Dylan Baldi to give us something quite as moody as "No Future/No Past."
This is the opening cut from the album, and it begins with a tinkling piano before turning into a sludgy dirge that draws heavily on the bleak atmosphere of early-'90s alt rock. The energy continues to ramp up slowly over the course of the four-and-a-half-minute rocker, culminating with Baldi growing and screaming while his bandmates kick up a hell of a grungy racket.
