Closer Than Kin

The Machineries of Breath

Boston’s Closer Than Kin are one band that manages to defy genres. The opening track to The Machineries of Breath is "The Euphoria of Strangulation,” a fast track fuelled by hardcore breakdowns and throaty sing-screams. While "Toys are Traded for Tears” is a more melodic, punk piece with not-so-uplifting lyrics. There’s a major surprise half way through the record, with the dreamy, acoustic "The Uncertainty of Sanity.” This album has got a little something for everybody, with interesting combinations of metal, thrash hardcore and dare I say it, emo. The Machineries of Breath is clear proof that Closer Than Kin are one of the tightest heavy bands out of Boston, no matter what the genre.
