Chron Goblin truly operate in their world when it comes to stoner metal and psychedelic music. While most bands rely on slow, heavy riffs, Chron Goblin work in the realm of swing and groove. While incorporating moments of atmosphere and sombre emotion this time around, Chron Goblin's forte is still the melodic sensibilities amongst their array of tempo changes. Chron Goblin are an institution of stoner metal, and Here Before further cements their legacy.

Here Before is full of swing. If you're more on the Led Zeppelin side of stoner metal than Black Sabbath, then there is plenty for you to enjoy. With the guitar gymnastics of "Giving in to Fun," "Out of My Mind" and "War," there are plenty of surprising rhythmic twists and turns. Where Chron Goblin really excel, however, are in the more delicate moments. With the psychedelic swells of "Ghost" and "Slipping Under," Here Before feels more like a cohesive work than a scattered mess.

This is an excellent Canadian stoner metal record. If you're looking for something that strays from the usual trappings of stoner metal, Here Before is worth your while.
