Business Casual

BY Stephen CarlickPublished Sep 15, 2010

Both members of Chromeo have stated that Business Casual is sexier and more sophisticated than any of their releases to date, and it's hard to disagree. Dave Macklovitch and Patrick Gemayel have always been patently fascinated with style over substance, but on Business Casual, there's nary any substance that couldn't in some way be considered stylish and sexy. Take, for example, "I'm Not Contagious." Of course, Macklovitch and Gemayel have put the time in crafting the song, writing the chords and lyrics, and producing it ― the "substance." And yet, it's as perfect an example as nearly any other track on Business Casual of the way that all their hard work can end up sounding like play. The dramatic, '80s-influenced opening sequence, the bumping bass-line, the slyly self-aware lyrics ― they all add up to a song, and, indeed, a record, that's as pleasing on an intellectual level as an instinctual one. Don't be surprised if when your body's moving to Macklovitch asking, "Did you see that girl from the grocery store?" you stop dancing, just for a moment, to use your mind ― wait a minute, he's scoping girls at the grocery store?
