Childish Gambino, St. Vincent and Islands Lead This Week's Can't Miss Concerts

Childish Gambino

Donald Glover, a.k.a. Childish Gambino, will be performing a two-night stint at Toronto's Sound Academy this week before heading off to Montreal to play a show at Metropolis as part of his Deep Web Tour. The tour, in celebration of Gambino's new album Because the Internet, only has these Canadian dates at the moment, but Glover will be returning to Montreal in August for Osheaga.

Foundry

The second instalment of the Foundry concert series takes place this weekend, and will feature another extensive list of artists and DJ sets to satisfy anyone's dance and electronic cravings. Friday night features Efdemin, Cosmin TRG, Nautiluss and Martin Fazekas. Those attending on Saturday night will be treated to performances by DJ Harvey, Invisible City and Members Only.

Islands

Montreal indie-rock quartet Islands are continuing their Canada-heavy tour in honour of their new record Ski Mask this week with dates in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. The band will conclude their westbound Canadian tour next week with a few shows in BC, making these some of the last chances for fans in Canada to see the band on this tour.

Mounties

Canadian supergroup Mounties, made up of Hawksley Workman, Hot Hot Heat's Steve Bays and Limblifter's Ryan Dahle, have kicked off their Canadian tour. After the release of their debut album Thrash Rock Legacy at the beginning of the month, the trio will be bringing the record to shows in Victoria, Vancouver and Calgary and further east across the country in the coming weeks.

Nils Frahm

Berlin experimental pianist Nils Frahm is on the road with stops this week in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal as part of his North American tour. His latest album, 2013's Spaces, scored an 8 from our reviewer, and his live shows have garnered praise for his impressive improvisations, making these shows that fans will not want to miss.

Real Estate

American indie-rockers Real Estate have just released their third studio record, Atlas, and they'll be bringing the new album to Toronto and Montreal this week. Attendees will be sure to hear plenty of the new record, and these are the only two Canadian dates on their current tour, so fans in the area won't want to miss out on this chance to see the band live.

St. Vincent

Coming off the release of her self-titled album at the beginning of the month, Annie Clark, better known by her stage name St. Vincent, will be stopping into the Commodore Ballroom for a show in Vancouver. This is the first Canadian date since the release of St. Vincent; she'll be back for a few concerts in Ontario, Alberta and Manitoba in June.

Yes

Finally, legendary prog-rock quintet Yes will be having a busy week, playing five shows in seven days. Concertgoers at these shows will be getting the unique opportunity to hear the band play three of their most popular albums in their entirety. The band, currently made up of Steve Howe, Geoff Downes, Jon Davison, Alan White and Chris Squire, will be playing The Yes Album, Close to the Edge and Going for the One from start to finish at each of these shows.
