Toronto, ON rap group Faction focus largely on conspiracy theories, politics and weed, alongside the requisite braggadocio, with each MC providing a different approach to the subject matter. Aside from a group album and EP, Primordial has one comic book-themed full-length, Iron Wind, and is about to drop a Kung-Fu-inspired LP on Wu-Tang-affiliated label Protect Your Neck, while Chief 4syt has released his second horrorcore album just in time for Halloween (plus, he has a few other previously released albums and EPs that aren't so thematically connected). Like most horrorcore, the primarily self-produced beats on Return to the Haunted Manners are dark head-nodders, and while the sound is lo-fi and the quality of the guests does fluctuate somewhat, Chief 4syt and his accomplices use horror genre tropes exceptionally well to expose the inadequacies and problems currently prevalent in the world. "Nightmare On Your Street" details the real-life horrors found in low income neighbourhoods; "Dead Dollars and Zombie Banks" criticizes the financial crisis and resulting bailout of big banksl "Bodysnatchers" discusses brainwashing and mind control; while indulging in drugs and alcohol is the subject of posse cut "Monster Mashed." Return to the Haunted Manners should appeal to fans of horrorcore, nerdcore, conspiracy theories or people who prefer their Halloween music with a message.
