Chicago Underground Trio

Chronicle

Capturing a rare and interesting moment in the 12-year history of the Chicago Underground Trio, Chronicle presents core members Rob Mazurek and Chad Taylor in dizzying light. Filmed in July 2006, this performance marks the live debut of bassist Jason Ajemian with the CUT, as well as the group’s first completely improvised concert. At Taylor’s urging, Ajemian plays a furious solo to introduce the set on the aptly named "Initiation,” though it’s difficult to make out what’s going on, even after Taylor kicks in with a busy beat, before Mazurek sends a squall of cornet into the air for "Resistance.” Filmmaker Raymond Salvatore Harmon imposed colourful images onto and behind the trio during the live show and he blends that spectacle with external film abstractions. Coupled with intense and dynamic playing from the Chicago Underground Trio, the visual aspects of Chronicle are alluring and disorienting.
