Published Sep 15, 2010Any Canadian music fan has noticed the impact that Canada's landscape has on its songwriters, as lyricists pack their songs with images of oceans, mountains and endless prairies. Last year, CBC Radio 2 spearheaded the Great Canadian Song Quest, allowing fans to pick locations that became the inspiration for brand new music from some of Canada's best musical talent. The project is now gearing up for another year, and the list of artists involved includes Hannah Georgas, Two Hours Traffic and Corb Lund.
All of the songs will be inspired by Canadian roads - this could be anything from Yonge Street in Toronto to a dirt road in the middle of rural Saskatchewan. Between now and September 21, you can vote on which stretch of road you'd like featured in the project over at CBC Radio 2's website.
Once the nominations are complete, final voting will take place from September 22 to October 1, as fans will narrow down the list to a top 13 - one for each province. Then, just three weeks later, on October 22 the songs will be unveiled and made available on iTunes.
The British Columbia-inspired tune will be penned by Vancouver songstress Hannah Georgas. Although she has to wait until October to begin writing her track, she's already begun formulating ideas about what she hopes to convey. "I want to write a song that will give someone that same feeling I get when I listen to tunes that get me pumped and excited to endure long road trips," she tells Exclaim in an email.
Explaining the influence of her home province on her music, she writes, "B.C. has been my home base for the past 6 years and it's definitely had a significant impact on my music. The people I've met, the rain, the mountains, the ups and downs I've experienced while living out here are all things that have affected my songwriting."
