Boris

Boris's game-changing Pink album blended sludge metal, stoner rock, shoegaze and psychedelia to craft an immersive listening experience that sounds just as vital today as it did when it arrived a decade ago. Now, the Japanese trio are performing the seminal album in its entirety. If you're in Toronto, this one's definitely worth checking out this week.

08/11/2016 Toronto, ON – Lee's Palace

case/lang/veirs

It's not often that three songwriting giants join forces to create a project that's more than the sum of their parts, and yet that's just what Neko Case, k.d. lang and Laura Veirs managed to do on their self-titled debut. It's a record that checks all the right boxes of country, folk and Americana, sounding at once familiar and distinct. Now, the three queens are heading out on the road to showcase their undeniable chemistry to audiences across the country. Check them out at one of the dates below.

08/12/2016 Grand Prairie, AB – Borstad Hill

Honey Jam

Honey Jam returns to Toronto this week to showcase a new class of young women set to take the music world by storm. Leading the charge this year are EDM-soul queen Fridaee, 14-year-old songwriter prodigy Sanae and hip-hop jack-of-all-trades Haviah Mighty. Check it out — you might just catch the next big thing.

Interstellar Rodeo

Interstellar Rodeo touches down in Winnipeg this week for a galactic hoedown of music and art. Gracing the stage at this year's edition are country-folk supergroup case/lang/veirs, indie rock heroes Wilco and Toronto singer-songwriter Serena Ryder. Don't miss out.

Manitoba Electronic Music Exhibition

Electronic music's best underground remixers, knob-twiddlers and beatmakers will have Manitoba bumping for the annual Manitoba Electronic Music Exhibition (MEME, though Harambe is unconfirmed as of yet). Highlights include "Torontroit" techno scion Greg Gow, 15-year vet Jamie Kidd and soulful housemaster Demuir. Rave children, look no further for your weekend plans.

Northern Lights Bluegrass and Old Tyme Music Festival

Those looking for some good old-fashioned bluegrass should look no further than the aptly named Northern Lights Bluegrass and Old Tyme Music Festival this week. Acts like the Po' Ramblin' Boys, Rugged Little Thing and the Annie Lou Band should provide plenty heeing and hawing for bluegrass veterans and newcomers alike. With acts going well into the night, it might not be the blue moon of Kentucky that hangs in the sky, but the feeling will be the same.

08/12-14/2016 Big River, SK – Ness Creek

Skeletonwitch

Over their past 12 years of existence, Skeletonwitch have done one thing better than anyone else: play fast, dirty, sinister metal. Audiences can expect more of the same as the Ohio five-piece bring their bone-crushing guitar leads, gut-busting drums and throat-searing vocals across the prairies this week. It's gonna get loud.

On his excellent new LP A Sailor's Guide to Earth, Sturgill Simpson mined everything from classic soul to psychedelia while still remaining true to his outlaw roots. Concertgoers should expect a night of sweet harmonies and pedal-steel twang by the bowlful. See the Kentucky singer-songwriter for yourself at one of the dates below.
