Cartoon Lizard

"All in the Cards"

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Mar 27, 2017

Victoria psych-pop unit Cartoon Lizard brings together five multi-instrumentalists, each contributing their own eccentric influences and talents to the collective. They're gearing up to release their debut EP Not Punk Not Raw later this spring, but Exclaim! is giving you an early idea of what to expect with the premiere of a cut called "All in the Cards."

"Essentially the song is about self motivation and accepting the unpredictability of life, but it's actually pretty autobiographical if you read into it," the band's Trevor Land tells Exclaim! "The first few lines reference coming home from a month long tour through the States with a psych-rock band and having the insatiable urge to start writing again and getting back on the road, the driving sensation of moving forward and focusing on what I want out of life and not getting bogged down by everything else. In a way it's a retelling of the birth of Cartoon Lizard."

The musical origin story comes to life with sun-drenched harmonies and groovy, retro-sounding instrumentation, and you can hear it in all of its whimsical glory right now.

Not Punk Not Raw is out April 14, and the band will celebrate the release with a show at Victoria's Vinyl Envy that same day, followed by a set at the Rickshaw in Vancouver on April 15.
