Can Unearth New 'Lost Tapes' Box Set

Krautrock fans, start salivating: German icons Can are prepping a new three-CD box set of unreleased material for release this June. The appropriately titled Can: The Lost Tapes will come out through Mute/Spoon Records on June 19 in North America (June 18 in the UK), and it will host previously unheard album outtakes, soundtrack work and live recordings.

A tracklisting has yet to appear, but The Lost Tapes will showcase a whack of material produced between 1968 and 1977 that was uncovered by accident after the German Rock N Pop museum took over Can's studio in Weilerswist. As the studio was being taken apart for relocation to Gronau, a series of poorly labelled master tapes was found, which turned out to be the unheard material. Band member Irmin Schmidt ended up sifting through the tracks with musician Jono Podmore to compile the collection.

"Obviously the tapes weren't really lost, but were left in the cupboards of the studio archives for so long everybody just forgot about them," Schmidt said in a statement. "Everybody except Hildegard, who watches over Can and its work like the dragon over the gold of the Nibelungen and doesn't allow forgetting."

Despite the lack of details on the set, you can check out recently uncovered number "Millionenspiel" down below.
