Calexico Head to the 'Edge of the Sun' on New LP

Having last taken listeners to Algiers, Arizona Americana vets Calexico now report that their next sonic journey will bring them to the Edge of the Sun. The album of the same name arrives April 14 via Anti- Records/City Slang.

A press release explains that the album, their first since 2012, was written in Mexico City before the band went back to Tucson to recorded the set at Wavelab Studios. Production duties were handled by engineer/producer Craig Schumacher (Neko Case, DeVotchKa), band leaders Joey Burns and John Convertino, and keyboardist Sergio Mendoza.

In addition to the Calexico crew, the 12-song set features a number of guest collaborators. Iron & Wine's Sam Beam, who had previously teamed up with Calexico on 2005's In the Reins EP, was tapped to add to the new LP's "Bullets & Rocks." Other guests include Neko Case, Band of Horses' Ben Bridwell, Nick Urata from DeVotchKa, Gaby Moreno, Amparo Sanchez, and members of Greek unit Takim.

"When I step back from this record I see the spirit of collaboration," Burns said in a statement. "As we began working on it, we started inviting people and it was a natural thing. We've always welcomed guests; it's in our DNA. John and I are really good at hopping in to play with people and improvise but we're also sensitive to what artists need."

Down below, you'll find Edge of the Sun's tracklisting, as well as a stream of Calexico's spicy, horns-spiked "Cumbia de Donde" with Carla Morrison.

The band have plans to tour North America in 2015, with a list of concert dates forthcoming.
