Cadence Weapon Teams Up with Kaytranada for New Track

Nearly five years removed from releasing his Polaris Music Prize-shortlisted LP Hope in Dirty City, Cadence Weapon (a.k.a. Roland "Rollie" Pemberton) has returned with a new track in the Kaytranada-produced "My Crew (Woooo)."

Premiered today (February 23) through Zane Lowe's Beats 1 radio show, the song draws from the Edmonton-bred, Toronto-based MC's experiences in Montreal's underground afterhours scene. Complete with shoutouts to a host of MTL neighbourhoods, the rapper calls the song "an anthem about unapologetically being who you want to be, no matter what anybody else thinks."

"There's a sense of personal freedom that's unique to Montreal and 'My Crew (Woooo)' is a representation of that feeling," Pemberton said in a statement. "It's a song about defying the labels that people try to place on artists. Is it underground? Mainstream? Conscious? Trap? Who cares, as long as it sounds dope."

Hope in Dirty City arrived in 2012, with Pemberton revealing he had begun work on a follow-up LP in 2013. A press release promises more music on the horizon, but until then, take in "My Crew (Woooo)" in the player below.
