DaBaby made some extremely homophobic comments on stage last weekend, and he keeps digging himself deeper in a hole by defending himself and offering non-apologies. Now, Canadian rapper Cadence Weapon has spoken out to denounce DaBaby's comments.
In a series of tweets posted yesterday (July 28), Cadence Weapon shared a series of statistics about HIV/AIDS, noting that the AIDS crisis disproportionately affects Black people. He wrapped up the series of tweets by directly calling out DaBaby, writing: "DaBaby getting in front of thousands of young impressionable kids to vilify and further stigmatize the most vulnerable people in our community is the last thing the world needs. We need to call out toxic behaviour in the rap world and DaBaby's actions shouldn't be tolerated."
Yesterday, DaBaby once again attempted to defend his homophobia, as his new video for "Giving What It's Supposed to Give" closes with the words, "My apologies for being me the same way you want the freedom to be you."
Seemingly in response to this latest message, Cadence Weapon tweeted out his thoughts on freedom of speech in hip-hop. He didn't mention DaBaby by name, but his comments seem to be a direct response to DaBaby's latest video.
Cadence Weapon wrote, "So many rappers have the same ideology as Alex Jones and Tucker Carlson, complaining about political correctness, cancel culture and freedom of speech. It's really pathetic and disappointing but not really surprising."
He continued, "Rap has always had conservative undertones, even the most conscious stuff in the '90s had misogyny, homophobia and rampant misinformation. Reorienting intolerance as 'freedom of speech' is a tactic borrowed straight from right wing pundits. Using hate to gain clout… smh."
