By The End Of Tonight A Tribute to Tigers

Rocking like a more academic version of Mineral, By The End Of Tonight attempt to fuse math rock with the epic instrumentals of bands like Explosions In The Sky. For the most part, they succeed, especially on tracks like "Stop, Drop and Roll Does Not Work In Hell,” where the eerie background sing-along at the beginning leads into a full-on decent into instrumental metal-influenced madness. Occasionally limited by drummer Jeff Wilson’s gimmick of playing a children’s drum kit, the sound of this record could be better, and it is unfortunate that the band can’t get past the novel idea of toy drums being played by an adult male. Beyond this sonic limitation, the band’s chops are top form, and while some moments may seem a bit showy, they more often than not coalesce to form a coherent whole. (Temporary Residence)
